ABOUT ME
Background
Dr. Miller is recognized internationally for his contributions to the epidemiology and control of schistosomiasis, especially in Egypt. His work is cited in WHO technical documents on schistosomiasis control. At the request and support of WHO, Dr. Miller, representing UH, prepared a report which was submitted to the Director General of the United Nations who presented the report to the United Nations General Assembly on the evaluation of schistosomiasis control measures.
Dr. Miller was the team leader and principal architect for the design of the $45 million Schistosomiasis Research Project, and principal architect of its epidemiologic field studies, the largest ever completed on schistosomiasis in Egypt or elsewhere in the world, past or present.
The prevention of Hepatitis C virus transmission in Egypt and has been Dr. Miller’s prime focus and endeavor since 2007.
Dr. Miller is co‑discover of the largest epidemic of hepatitis C virus in the world today which is also located in Egypt (Kamel, M.A. and Miller, F. D. 1992. High HCV Prevalence in Egyptian Blood Donors. Lancet 340:427). This discovery has led to the prevention of HCV transmission through blood transfusion in Egypt and other ongoing control programs. We were the first also to publish on the epidemiology of hepatitis C virus in an Egyptian community and found that 18% of that population had been infected (Kamel MA, Miller FD et al. 1994. The epidemiology of S. mansoni, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C infection in Egypt. Annals of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology 88 (5) 501-509).
